Assistant Chief of Operations
Purpose of Job
The purpose of this job is to perform administrative, technical and supervisory work functions in directing activities of fire officers appointed and firefighters. Duties and responsibilities include supervising appointed and/or assigned staff; assisting the Fire Chief with planning, coordination and control of all aspects of fire department operations, with special interest in fire and emergency response activities and issues; maintaining readiness for emergency call response; responding to fire, medical, and related emergency calls and taking proper action; educating staff and public on fire department emergency operations; and performing other tasks related to Fire Department activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Ultimately responsible to lead the fire department in fulfilling the mission of the fire department with specific focus on fire and emergency response.
Ensures the fire department is progressive in the field of emergency service operations and response.
Administer the operations of the emergency response division,
Ensures all fire reports and data pertaining to emergency response is in compliance with TFIRS requirements.
Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, handling employee concerns and problems, assigning work, counseling, and administering disciplinary and other personnel actions.
Assists/participates in planning, development, organization and supervision of departmental activities; administers daily operations of emergency response personnel.
Supervises operation and maintenance of fire equipment, apparatus, and station facilities; inspects stations, grounds, apparatus, equipment, and personnel.
Coordinates the creation of specifications for all new apparatus and equipment utilized for emergency response activities.
Responds to, and participates in, emergency calls for fire, medical, and other emergency situations; directs traffic route to destination; assumes command of emergency scene.
Supervises and/or participates in all functions associated with resolution of emergency calls (to include removing individuals from dangerous/hazardous situations, performing all activities necessary to suppress/extinguish fires, assessing emergency medical problems and performing prescribed treatment as outlined and authorized under Tennessee First Responder guidelines, etc.).
May operate specialized fire vehicles/equipment (fire engines, ladder trucks, pumps, etc.).
Performs/coordinates special projects as directed (e.g., managing computer system; maintaining database information; soliciting bids for equipment and services; maintaining records for hazardous materials sites or water supply/flow records; developing and maintaining City disaster plan; etc.).
Organizes and conducts monthly meetings with fire department personnel for the purpose of improved communications.
Receives and/or prepares various documentation (forms, checklists, reports, correspondence, etc.); processes, completes, and/or forwards as appropriate.
Responds to routine requests for information from officials, employees, members of the staff, the public or other individuals.
May be required to fill in as Acting Fire Chief and perform related duties as required.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Four years of college education preferred (Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science with NFA Fire Prevention and Executive Development courses preferred), with extensive training and experience in all aspects of firefighting and protection activities. This position requires State Fire Officer I Certification, State Fire Inspector Certification, State of Tennessee First Responder level of medical care, and a valid driver's license.

Duties and responsibilities include supervising appointed and/or assigned staff; assisting the Fire Chief with planning, coordination and control of all aspects of fire department operations, with special interest in the training of fire department personnel; maintaining the readiness of personnel for emergency call response; responding to fire, medical, and related emergency calls and taking proper action; educating staff and public on fire department emergency operations; and performing other tasks related to Fire Department activities.

Ensures all training records and data pertaining to personnel and the fire department are entered into the fire department data management system.
Ensures the fire department is an active participant in the Tennessee Commission on Fire Fighting and that all training and records are in compliance with applicable NFPA standards and policy and rules of the Tennessee Commission on Fire Fighting.
Coordinates all training requirements with mutual and automatic aid companies and departments.
Utilizes ISO, NFPA, OSHA, and other applicable regulations, standards, and laws to ensure fire department personnel are properly trained and in compliance with the latest standards regarding emergency response.
