The Purpose of the Pledge~
The purpose of the pledge is not to limit or restrict
our employment options, but rather to remind us of the
importance of every decision we make and of the opportunities
for proactive involvement that exist in all aspects of
our daily schedules.
History of the Pledge~
In April of 1987, members of Student Citizens for Social
Responsibility at Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA began
a broad-based campaign to create a voluntary graduation
Pledge as part of commencement ceremonies. Students at
HSU then voted in agreement to make the pledge an optional
portion of spring graduation.
In combination with unanimous resolution of support from
the faculty senate, Arcata’s city council, and other
organizations, the student group (S.C.S.R.) convinced
HSU’s administration to grant a place for the pledge
in the May commencement exercises.
Since it's inception by HSU students in 1987, the Pledge has become a national movement and is offered in some variation of form to graduates at over 100 instituions nationwide and internationally.
