Thank you for agreeing to spend the time necessary to complete this serious inquiry regarding your department’s involvement in Community Risk Reduction, and its level of commitment to reducing firefighter injuries and fatalities. The information we collect from this investigation will contribute to our understanding of the relationship between community risk reduction strategies and firefighter safety—the ultimate goal of the Everyone Goes Home® program. A word about terminology. Most of us are familiar with the terms fire prevention and public education. However, we are asking you to take a broader view incorporating all the prevention activities a department may perform. Therefore, we are using the more modern term of Community Risk Reduction which combines prevention and mitigation strategies. It anticipates potential naturally occurring hazards such as, floods, hurricanes, lightning strikes, earthquakes, etc. and human created hazards such as, fires, falls, crashes, etc., within a community. A community risk reduction program facilitates interventions to prevent or diminish adverse outcomes from these hazards. We are also asking you to think about your knowledge of the Everyone Goes Home® program so we may insert this information into the Community Risk Reduction material that will emanate from this work. Thank you.
